To study the effect of the anticonvulsant, diphenylhydantoin (DPH) ok thyroid hormone metabolism, serum T4, T3 resin uptake, T7, serum T3, .T4/T3 ratio and serum TSH were measured in euthyroid patients, two and four reeks after administration of DPH. Serum. T4, T7 and T3 were all decreased, T4/T3 ratio increased and the serum TSH also increased. This suggests T3 metabolism is more profoundly influenced by DPH than T4 metabolism. Or peripheral conversion of T4, to T3 may have been shifted to another pathway i.e. to reverse T3.
